It also provides extensive cross-referenced listings of tunes, musicians, soloists, and arrangers, and an itinerary of the band's engagements from the time Basie left Kansas City in 1936 to his death in 1984. The main text consists of chronologically arranged, annotated entries on five different categories of recordings: commercial sessions, electrical transcriptions for use by radio stations, broadcasts recorded privately or held in radio or television archives, films and videos, and location recordings of engagements. The text is enlivened by comments on musical significance, personnel changes, and relevant news events of the day, as well as pertinent anecdotes. An appendix lists all known micro-groove issues of Count Basie performances, cross-referenced to the main text. The band itinerary, contained in a second appendix, provides an account of engagements in clubs and concert halls, at jazz festivals and racetracks, and even aboard ocean liners. A wealth of cross-referenced material is contained in five separate indexes covering all known films and videos in which Basie took part; radio and television performances; arrangers whose work has colored the Count Basie orchestra repertoire; musicians, vocalists, and other voices heard in the sessions listed; and tunes played, together with composer, lyricist, and year of composition.
The volume also includes a bibliography. The Blues 1936?1950, chronicles Basie?s life from the Kansas City years, discovery by John Hammond, triumph in New York with the floating swing of the All-American rhythm section and tenor saxist Lester Young, through to the eventual demise of the swingingest of big bands in January 1950. Author by: Count Basie Language: en Publisher by: Format Available: PDF, ePub, Mobi Total Read: 56 Total Download: 979 File Size: 43,8 Mb Description: Count Basie was one of America's pre-eminent and influential jass pianists, bandleaders, and composers, known for such classics as 'Jumpin' at the Woodside,' 'Goin' to Chicago Blues,' 'Sent for You Yesterday and Here You Come Today,' and 'One O'Clock Jump.' In Good Morning Blues, Basie recounts his life story to Albert Murray, from his childhood years playing ragtime with his own pickup band at dances and pig roasts, to his years in New York City in search of opportunity, to rollicking anecdotes of Basie's encounters with Fats Waller, Frank Sinatra, Fred Astaire, Sammy Davis Jr., Quincy Jones, Billie Holliday, and Tony Bennett. In this classic of jazz autobiography that was ten years in the making, Albert Murray brings the voice of Count Basie to the printed page in what is both testimony and tribute to an incredibly rich life.

The music: The incomparable Count Basie and Benny Goodman, among others. The setting: Living rooms across America and, most of all, New York City. Dream Lucky covers politics, race, religion, arts, and sports, but the central focus is the period's soundtrack—specifically big band jazz—and the big-hearted piano player William 'Count' Basie. His ascent is the narrative thread of the book—how he made it and what made his music different from the rest. But many other stories weave in and out: Amelia Earhart pursues her dream of flying 'around the world at its waistline.' Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., stages a boycott on 125th Street. And Mae West shocks radio listeners as a naked Eve tempting the snake.
Critic Nat Hentoff praises the 'precise originality' with which Roxane Orgill writes about music. In Dream Lucky, she magically lets readers hear the past.

BIG BAND Big Band Transcriptions and Arrangements. $15 per chart (unless otherwise noted) A 'chart' is an arrangement (a full orchestration), it includes all of the parts for all of the instruments. These are generally note-for-note transcriptions of the arrangements that the original big band recorded. In many cases, even the solos are transcribed. In most cases, the style is big band swing from the 1930s and 1940s. The ones that say 'arrangement' are my own arrangements.
Count Basie Band Tour 2017
Note: The instrumentation varies a little from chart to chart (usually from 13-17-pieces). With the 13-piece charts, usually there is no guitar (although the piano part can be used since the chords are always noted).
So, the real range is from 14 to 17-piece. The instrumentation is noted by three numbers (saxes, trumpets, trombones). For example 532 = 5 saxes, 3 trumpets, 2 trombones, 544 = 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones, etc. Almost all have 5 saxes, there are usually 3 or 4 trumpets, and 2-4 trombones.
Since it is normal for trombone parts to double trumpet parts (an octave lower), you can add trombone parts, if needed, by dropping the appropriate trumpet part down an octave (and transposed down two half steps). The Rhythm section almost always consists of piano, bass and drums (sometimes with guitar). Some of the charts have vocals (usually one chorus) and can be easily replaced by a solo (or solos) if you don't have a vocalist.
A few are basically 'all' vocal (i.e., beginning to end). Those are noted as 'vocals.' Scores are provided with charts written in Finale. The earlier 'manuscript' charts do not come with scores. I will expand any transcription or arrangement to fit your instrumentation for $30. FREE SAMPLES: Here are some samples of my work (click to download for free): Many of my charts are in manuscript.
The last few years I've been using Finale (which produces commercial quality parts and scores). M VOLUME DISCOUNTS!
